Sophie wakes in the early hours from a troubled sleep. Moonlight is leeching through the blinds and dancing across the super-kingsize bed. Ollie is fast asleep beside her. She suspects, from his snores, that he’s drunk too much. She certainly has.

Once Ged had made his point, he steered the dinner conversation back to innocuous subjects. Sophie played her part. But she couldn’t suppress her alarm. Ged didn’t care if she and Ollie thought he was capable of extreme violence. He’d stopped denying it. In fact, he’s as good as admitted it, and is using it as a threat to bully them.

Ollie’s fears for Kristin are real.

Wide awake, with her thoughts racing, Sophie gets out of bed, and wanders in and out of the bathroom. They must help Kristin escape from Ged.

But how?

Kristin’s behaviour makes sense. She asked Sophie to meet her and told her about the abuse. This was a cry for help. But she lost her nerve. And who can blame her? It shows how frightened she is of her husband.

There’s no doubt about the power Ged wields. He’s persuaded an unnamed Cabinet Minister to back his story that he was in London. Faced with that, simply telling the police that this is a lie is unlikely to be enough.

As she paces the room, Ollie stirs in his sleep. She doesn’t want to disturb him. He’s been carrying the burden of this alone for far too long. In the half-light, she can just make out the contours of his face; his eyelids flicker, and a rush of love for this man surges through her.

How did she get this lucky?

To support him, she needs to come up with a plan. She’s antsy and her brain is nattering. She needs to move.

Opening the door, she tiptoes out into the hallway.

The thing that sickens her the most is the way Ged tried to turn it around and blame the dead girl, claiming she put herself in harm’s way.

Her fault. She deserved it. It’s the age-old excuse.

The house is silent and still; the raw concrete walls give it a sombre feel, like a mausoleum. Sophie makes her way downstairs, bare feet on the cold glass treads, and into the cavernous atrium.

The moon is full; its light floods in through the tall windows. The art alone must be worth millions. There’s an eclectic mix. In its chilly beam, she recognises a couple of Rothkos. Then some nineteenth century pastoral landscapes, and a watercolour that might be a Turner.

As she rounds a corner, she sees a glimmer of light down a narrow corridor behind the stairs. This must be the kitchen; the domain of the chef and the staff. They’re still at it, cleaning up.

Ged treats them like servants and ignores them. More fool him. They see and hear everything and would know what’s going on. But can she get them to talk to her?

She walks down the corridor towards the light. The kitchen is spacious and high-tech, a T shaped central cooking island, surrounded by steel cabinets.
